Winter is fast approaching here in western Virginia and you won’t be needing your air conditioner for quite a while. Hopefully you’re getting your heating system ready for the cold weather that is on its way. If you’ve contacted your local HVAC expert for a preventive maintenance checkup for your furnace, you are in great shape.
But remember, it’s also important to make sure you winterize your air conditioner so that it’s well protected and prepared to keep you cool next summer. Take a look at these helpful tips for winterizing your air conditioner:
- Drain hoses and pipes inside and connected to your air conditioning system. Be sure the condensate drain is dry. Shut off the unit’s water supply, if possible. Turn off faucets outside.
- If you use window air conditioners, the units should be removed and put into storage for the winter. Otherwise, provide protection with a cover. Tightly close the vents to avoid energy loss.
- Seal up any leaks surrounding the unit and the window with caulk or weatherstripping.
- Clean the condenser (the outdoor portion of your system) with a garden hose and pressure nozzle. Spray away all the dirt and buildup from the fan and cooling coils.
- Cover the outdoor unit with a breathable covering to protect it from wet leaves, sleet, snow and mud so that it won’t rust or become frozen. Protecting your air conditioning system will help ensure it lasts a good long time. It’s also a good idea to get it tuned up before using it next year.
