Ongoing annual service of your heat pump should not be overlooked. If you want your heat pump to last a long time and serve you faithfully, you will need to take good care of it, and this includes having regular service performed by a qualified professional. Additionally, having service performed on your heat pump will keep it working at its most efficient, which will save energy and lower your heating bills.
You can perform some types of maintenance yourself. Others should only be performed by a trained technician. Before attempting any sort of maintenance, make sure that the heat pump is turned off. You can do this by disconnecting the power supply. Some heat pump maintenance you can perform yourself includes:
- Cleaning or replacing the air filter at least once every three months. Check the model of your heat pump for the exact timing.
- Checking and cleaning the heating coils if they are accessible.
- Checking and cleaning the condensate pan, drain and trap.
- Checking that your furniture is not blocking the air registers.
- Keeping the outside area around the heat pump clear of debris.
An annual check-up performed by a qualified service professional will include the following maintenance activities:
- Checking for blockages in the air ducts, indoor coil, blowers and filters.
- Checking and repairing any leakage.
- Checking the refrigerant for charge and leaks.
- Checking the electrical terminals, cleaning the connections and tightening them as needed.
- Applying non-conductive coating.
- Checking the belts and lubricating the motor.
- Checking the function of the thermostat.
Should your heat pump turn on and off rapidly, make strange noises or have other problems and you have already performed your own regular maintenance, it’s important to call in a professional to have your heat pump checked thoroughly.
