Batts, Foam Or Loose Fill: Which Type Of Home Insulation Is Right For Your Particular Project?

Insulation comes in several different forms. Each type is designed for particular areas. Using the right kind of insulation for any project you plan to take on can help to ensure energy and cost savings in your southwest Virginia home.

Batt insulation is available in several materials, including fiberglass, mineral wool and natural and plastic fibers. Batt insulation is the easiest for the do-it-yourselfer to install. It is best for unfinished walls — where it goes between the studs — and above ceilings and under floors. Batt insulation also works in attics and crawlspaces.

Loose-fill insulation can be made of mineral wool, fiberglass or cellulose and is blown into hard-to-reach areas, such as behind walls, in crevices between walls and floors and on attic floors. It needs to be installed by a professional, who has the necessary equipment.

Foam insulation comes in two forms. Rigid foam insulation is ideal for ductwork and behind new walls, floors, ceilings and low-slope roofs. Rigid foam insulation is easiest to install during construction. It is typically made of polystyrene, polyurethane or polyiso plastic. Rigid foam insulation does not require expert installation.

Spray-foam insulation is made from the same materials but is sprayed into wall spaces, where it hardens. Spray-foam insulation is ideal for existing walls, wall cavities and attic floors. Unlike rigid foam, it requires professional installation.

In addition to knowing what kind of insulation to use, you should be aware of the R-value of each type and how much your project will require. Use the ZIP code insulation guide provided by the Department of Energy to determine the recommended R-value for your job.
