If you’re looking for a new heating and cooling system, a heat pump is a good choice for southwest Virginia. Like most other systems, the heat pump has steadily become more efficient over the years. If you’re considering a heat pump — or even if you’re replacing a heat pump you bought awhile ago — you want to consider the energy-efficiency rating, of course.
But consider several other advanced features, as well:
- A unit with a two-speed compressor can save you a lot of energy, especially when the weather is not extreme. The heat pump senses the temperature and adjusts the speed of the compressor accordingly, saving electricity and wear and tear on the unit.
- Variable-speed fans, both indoor and outdoor, reduce energy consumption and minimize noise inside and out. As with other two-speed compressors, the unit senses how fast to run for the most comfortable heating and cooling.
- Some new pumps have a feature called a desuperheater that can heat water two to three times more efficiently than a hot-water heater.
- Scroll compressors available in some units reduce wear and generate warmer air in the winter. These units have two scrolls. One is stationary, and the other rotates around it. Units equipped with this option are quieter and typically have a longer life.
If you’re concerned about the temperature dipping too low for comfort, consider pairing your heat pump with a natural-gas furnace or another system that can kick in when you need it. A dual-fuel system such as this can be especially cost effective during a prolonged cold snap.
